Getting to Know Hillsborough

Hillsborough is a great town! If you’re just moving in with us, read on to find out some of our favorite things about Hillsborough.

Food and Drinks:

Mystery Brewing on Nash Street offers local brews on tap and have recently expanded to offer food items as well.  There is an outdoor area in the back that allows dogs to come enjoy things as well.  They frequently have live music shows too.

Hillsborough BBQ is right next door to Mystery (and they will deliver to Mystery if you are enjoying the music and beer there).  It’s hard to miss the aroma wafting out of this place!  The brisket and smoked chicken are all delicious, and there is usually a good selection of desserts to sample as well.

The Wooden Nickel Pub on Churton, Hillsborough’s main street, is a great little pub with some good food items.  It gets busy on the weekends and evenings but if you have time to slip in on a weekday afternoon, you can enjoy a less crowded atmosphere.

La Place Restaurant serves up some delicious Creole/Cajun cooking, their sausage is made in house and the french bread is light, fluffy and flown in from New Orleans!  The gumbo rocks.

Ixtapa is offers excellent more authentic style Mexican food for a reasonable price.  The outdoor dining is great to relax and enjoy the evening.

Activities:

Each month the town of Hillsborough puts on a Last Friday Art Walk event downtown on Churton Street, art stores open up for browsing, live music in the square, food trucks, drum circles, vendors, etc.  Many of the stores offer light snacks and wines to enjoy while browsing art and goods.  If you aren’t afraid of heights, climb to the look out deck at 106 Churton for some lovely views over the quaint downtown.

Hillsborough is part of Orange County, which has a great library system.  The Hillsborough branch is very nice so be sure to get your library card, just bring a copy of your lease or water bill to get a card.

There are also nice walking trails on the southern end of town by the Eno River, with some interesting views and sculptures along the way.

Gold Park is one of the larger parks with picnic areas, large dog park and soccer fields.

Groceries:

Weaver Street Market is your fancy grocery spot in Hillsborough, think Whole Foods but local.  They have a good selection of bakery items, organic produce and more.  Join the community owned coop for specials and more.
